Shane Monahan of the Aviva Premiership Rugby Union club Gloucester Rugby single handedly ripped up their fellow Premiership rivals the London Irish as he led his side to a thumping win in the Amlin Challenge Cup on Sunday night.

The wingman scored four tries in the 47-3 demolition of The Exiles at Kingsholm as the entire team played some of the most scintillating rugby. The Irishman, who was recruited by the club in the summer from Rugby League giants Rotherham made the most of a dominant display from his support cast as The Cherry Whites moved one step closer to qualification to the next stages of the competition.

He scored the first two tries in the last five minutes of the opening half and rounded off his hat-trick midway through the second half. He scored his fourth try and the fifth of his team’s six tries in the match with nine minutes left on the clock. Freddie Burns, a newcomer for the England national team, racked up 17 points for his team as Gloucester Rugby completed a quick fire double over their fellow domestic rivals to keep control of the proceedings in their pool.

With Bath Rugby also winning and the London Welsh succumbing to a defeat at home, the result was significant as a demonstration that English rugby can really compete on a continental level and with the performance that the Gloucester side put up, it will definitely do a world of good to their already high confidence as they return to action in the Premiership this weekend.

Gloucester Rugby will look to keep their run of decent results going and with one foot already in the knockout stages of the Amlin Challenge Cup, the team can chop and change with the lineup to give the fringe players a chance to impress.
