Gloucester Rugby finally Sign D’Apice
Tomasso D’Apice may be considered as a hidden gem for the Aviva premiership Rugby Union side Gloucester Rugby and had to work very hard to earn his one year contract at Kingsholm, but Nigel Davies has backed the Italian to secure a long term future at the club. The Italian hooker had been training with The Cherry Whites for almost five weeks but it was only on the 4th of September that the club took up the option of signing him and registering him for the Aviva Premiership.
The Italian arrived at Kingsholm for a two week trial and the management of The Cherry Whites extended his stay week on week after the end of that initial two week trial period. However, this was a very difficult period for the 24 year old as he was not quite sure whether he would be given a contract at Gloucester Rugby at the end of the trial period. With his future in rugby in doubt after his Italian club Aironi folding due to financial instability, not being able to secure a deal at Kingsholm would have been a severe blow to his career ambitions.
However, his perseverance on the field has paid off and The Cherry Whites have finally signed the Italian to fill in the boots left by the enforced retirement of Andy Long. And according to Davies, the team was extremely lucky because the folding of Aironi had enabled them to land an extremely gifted player with the highest potential, which would not have been available otherwise.
Davies went on to add that they scouted D’Apice quite late but with his experience in the Six Nations as well as the Rugby World Cup, in spite of only being 24 years old will benefit Gloucester Rugby immensely in the long run.
