Team mates of Tom Savage at the Aviva Premiership Rugby Football Union club Gloucester Rugby believe he is a natural born leader.
The flanker is one of the hardest men in the English professional game at this moment and he doesn’t believe in talking the talk but walking the walk and sets an example for his team mates to follow on the pitch. He has all the credentials to stand in front of his team and captivate them with his passion and dedication, and such is his desire, he will never have to rescind those duties as well.
As he was thrust into the role of captain at the very last second, the 23 year old had to issue a battle cry against the opponents and that is no mean feat considering he had to motivate a team of players where most of his team mates are older and more experienced that him. As he scanned the room, he realized he had nothing to say with the Gloucester Rugby offering him their full conviction and confidence with their eyes. And according to the man himself, he had nothing to say and added that it happened all of a sudden.
He was training when he was asked if he would take up the duties of skippering the side and he had no hesitation in answering in the affirmative. He mentioned that it is a responsibility that he likes to have on his shoulders and the boys did well supporting him and following his every direction on the pitch.
And although Savage doesn’t know when he will be given the armband again, his Gloucester Rugby team mates are sanguine that it is only a matter of time before Nigel Davies, the Director of Rugby hands over the captaincy to the young star.
