There was a time when Johnny May was the Jack of all Trades in the back line, but now, the youngster wants to be the master of one.
The extremely versatile flier for Gloucester Rugby wants to become an expert winger and Director of Rugby for the club Nigel Davies has backed the young gun to live up to the role. The 22 year old has been extremely impressive for The Cherry Whites from inside centre out. However, the speedster born in Swindon wants to settle down into the role of a winger.
May also admitted that it is this opportunity that has helped him keep his place at Kingsholm. The youngster put pen to paper on a new two year deal with the club that will see him play for Gloucester Rugby till at least the 2015 season end. Although he had the pick of the cream of the Aviva Premiership, he chose to stay with his beloved home club and added that he is happy here.
And now that he has got the contract situation sorted out, he wants to nail down a place for himself on the wings and go from strength to strength. May gave an explanation where he stated that he has played at a variety of positions for the club over the last years but the advice that he gets when he speaks to Nigel and some others is to settle down on the wing and focus on making the position his own.
May added that Gloucester Rugby has no dearth of brilliant wing players and the competition for places on the wing is tough and that is the added incentive of improving himself day in and day out as he looks to write his name in the history books for the club with long service.
